I don't think that I can adequately express how happy A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin made me. It's Regency stepbrother romance! It's kind of forbidden, but not really. It's certainly not smiled upon by polite London society, which adds a certain something extra. Basically, Declan and Rosalie haven't seen each other in ten years. She was sent away to school and he inherited a dukedom after his father passed. Then Rosalie is dropped off at his doorstep, because two years after graduation, her mother still hasn't come for her! Declan is not pleased at having his bachelor pad invaded by his little stepsister, who isn't so little anymore.A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin is simply amazing. There's so much tension between Rosalie and Declan! She's always had a crush on him, but knew things could never happen between them. But having her in such close proximity, Declan can't help but be by affected her. His solution? Marry her off as soon as possible! Out of sight, out of mind! Easier said than done.
What I also loved about A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin was the change in setting! We still get the typical ballroom scenes, but there's also two instances where Rosalie visits Sodom, which is basically a sex club. She goes for the simple mission of getting her first kiss, and I bet you can guess who that ends up being! He doesn't know it's her of course, because of the mask she wears. But the entire time I'm sitting here mentally screaming at her to take it off! Let him know! Be together!
A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin also has amazing side characters. Declan asks his aunt and cousin to stay with him to act as chaperones while Rosalie has her season and I just adored them! Of course, they can see feelings developing before Declan does and they do a bit of meddling. And I just loved cousin Aurelia to pieces! She's bookish and doesn't always hold her tongue, and needless to say, she's having trouble finding a husband. So I'm super excited that her book is next!
Then there's Rosalie's god awful mother. This woman is just...awful. Forget for a second that she left her daughter at school for two extra years without a word, but she also thinks Rosalie is jealous of her! I guess her mother is a MILF and knows it, but the way she talks down to Rosalie is awful. Then there's her subplot. That woman is insane! Like, she is either crazy or straight up evil. I can't even with what she does to Rosalie toward the end!
A Good Debutante's Guide to Ruin is an all around great read. I was super invested in the romance, and I believed the tension between Rosalie and Declan. Even though they aren't related, step-sibling relations is still a bit taboo. But you can't help who you love! The supporting characters and subplot are just as wonderful and engaging as the main romance! I seriously do not have a single complaint!

A Good Debutante Guide to Ruin The Debutante Files Sophie Jordan 9780062222503 Books Reviews
Overall, this was a very good read; I read it all in one sitting, which is a fairly good measuring stick to me of whether or not a book is worth at least four stars. I would definitely read more from this author. Why not five stars? There were a couple of slow spots in the first few chapters, and there was initially very little interaction between the hero and heroine. The book did get exciting as the heroine and her friend got adventurous at a risqué club, and from there on the chemistry between the H and h was fantastic. One other contention I had with the story was an abduction toward the end; it was unnecessary and a bit too reminiscent of a soap-opera plot twist, and it painted the heroine in an unrealistically helpless light. Instead, I wish the author had stayed focused on the revelation the hero made about his stepmother. That was dramatic enough and should have been given further attention by the author. Also, I had no issue with the taboo nature of the H and h's relationship blossoming from stepsiblings to lovers (they had spent little time in the same household and didn't have any interactions for the past ten years), but it seemed odd that they never had a conversation about how to explain their particularly unusual situation to their friends and society after deciding to marry. Something along the lines of, "We're going to shock the hell out of people, and some might think our marriage is weird, but I've never thought of you as a sister/brother," etcetera and so on. Overall, though, a shout out to Sophie Jordan for taking on a rather difficult premise and leaving the reader truly believing the couple really loved each other and would live happily ever after.
I know that historically first cousins marrying was not considered a big deal and in royal families it happened all the time. Step siblings are not technically related, but there is still an ick factor to get over. I remember when I was in high school, my very good friend was making out with the brother of her mom’s boyfriend. It totally weirded me out and I kind of had those feelings in the beginning of this book. I guess the saving factors were that the lust they feel for each other is hot and there is an age difference between the two that made it seem somewhat reasonable.
Declan is like most historical romance novel men – tall, handsome, sinful and commanding. He is horrified to find ‘Carrots’ rusticating in front of his fire one evening. Rosalie has been left to linger in life and requires his help to survive. At the start Declan is cold and uncompromising. He actually considers turfing Rosalie out on the street just to be done with her.
It’s actually not Rosalie that is the problem, but his history with her mother – his step-mother. She is a fortune hunter personified and was the root cause of a lifelong rift between Declan and his father. He knows nothing of Rosalie and paints her with the same taint as her mother. The story unfolds with his growing admiration for Rosalie and desire to see her warm his bed.
Once Declan decides Rosalie can reside in his bachelor home, he calls for his Aunt and cousin. I so adored the addition of these two into the story. The aunt was exactly what you would expect a society ton mama to be and cousin Aurelia is a treasure! I couldn’t get enough of how Aurelia undermined her mother and was so pragmatic about the marriage mart. She had every cause to be resentful and mean to Rosalie, yet she took her into her confidence and befriended her. Declan has declared that he must marry off Rosalie and provides a huge dowry and wardrobe in order to get the task done post haste. Rosalie is a beauty and now has a fortune attached to her name – something Aurelia admits is lacking in her life and therefore limits her marriage prospects, yet is never caustic about it to Rosalie.
Aurelia has a wild streak a mile wide and this is where the story gets interesting. She convinces naïve and sheltered Rosalie to go to essentially a sex club called Sodom with her for a titillating evening. Where do authors come up with these ideas? I mean, I understand that in the early 1800s there was no pornography and strip clubs were brothels, but these scenes are spicy!! The author describes almost every naughty sex act and more when the girls visit one evening. Aurelia wants to breathlessly watch, but Rosalie wants something innocent (especially for this club). She wants her first kiss.
Of course she ends up kissing Declan. I really liked these two together and it helped get rid of the weirdness of them being related by marriage. A simple taste is never enough however and these two are drawn to each other like moths to a flame. The sex scenes are very well written and really hot. I loved how domineering and strong Declan’s character was.
Rosalie’s mother makes a dramatic appearance and I groaned with dismay. Just when things were going well between the two! She packs up immediately and leaves to her mother’s home. However, her mother is not much of a caregiver and being in her home is horrendous for Rosalie. She still smarts after being told she was unwanted in Declan’s home and is afraid of her lust for him, so she toughs it out until Aurelia interferes. I hated Rosalie’s mother. She does nothing but try to use Rosalie for her own interests and the denouement of the story is from her machinations. Declan has suffered at the hands of Rosalie’s mother – another ick factor – and takes great delight in serving her a well deserved conge.
I really liked this book. I believe it is the first in a new series and I imagine the next ones will be of Declan’s friends, Max and Will (Aurelia’s brother). Max and Aurelia have sparks flying off the page when they are together, so I really hope they are the next story!!
