If you are hoping that this book will be like Disher's police procedurals or his Wyatt books, you will be disappointed. This is literary fiction, and the reader has to work at it to get anything out of it. I started this book about three times and quit, but finally when I was on an airplane for 6 hours with nothing else to read, I made it past the first few chapters and began to enjoy it. The story is told in short, episodic and sometimes repetitious chapters that jump back and forth in time and across generations. Eventually one gets a feel for the life of the main character, Anna, but what I took most from the book was a feeling of place and time, hopes and disappointments and human frailty. Go into it with an open mind, and you may enjoy it. Go into it looking for a linear story that can be summed up in a few paragraphs, and you will be disappointed.

The Sunken Road Garry Disher 9781864480740 Books Reviews

It was a real struggle to read this book wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I didn't finish as the style was clearly experimental and I did not like the style. I loved his more traditional novels.
Definitely one outside the box, but intriguing and so enjoyable. Never read anything like it before, but I certainly don't regret reading it. I was surprised that I like it so much.
Garry Disher never disappoints. His books give me a chance to visit down under without the plane fare. The sense of place is clear. The history is palpable.
It's impossible to not love anything Garry has written. Another great story!
