This book had too much of a possessive theme that it was a trial turn off. The H should have allied the H to have some independence.

Melting Fire Anne Mather 9780263094572 Books Reviews

Prior to reading this book, I read the previous review by La Femme Hipster. From her comments, I was intrigued to discover what the heck Anne Mather had ingested to produce a Harlequin romance fiction where the heroine is cavorting around the pool naked and had the hero raping her.

After reading the book, I must admit my interpretation of these scenes are vastly different. Furthermore, I'm going to have to believe Harlequin/Mills & Boon agreed because they published the book in the Presents line and would not have either of their main characters act in such a way.

Overall, I thought Melting Fire was a nice twist on this author's usual fare of borderline incestuous relationships with the accompanying age difference. For once it was the hero who openly knew his mind and Pygmalion-like guided the heroine into achieving the type of accomplishments necessary to fit comfortably into his lifestyle. In this quest he was aided and abetted by the heroine's "mother" figure which allowed his actions to be viewed as acceptable rather than pervy. He fell in love, he acknowledged it, discussed it with her "mother", guided her to be able to overcome their age difference as much as possible, then took himself off and waited until she finished school before attempting to change the status of their relationship. Unfortunately, this resulted in a heroine who was somewhat smothered and over-protected. Accordingly, it took some time (6 months or less) for her to gain some worldly experience before she could fully mature and understand and recognize her own feelings. In the end though, I was confident that their's was a strong love and equal partnership which would withstand the tests of time.

A definite re-read!
From the back of the book
"I want to live my own life"
But Olivia's bid for independance was swiftly rejected. Richard replied with the hard assurance of a successful businessman. "I've paid for your upbringing,Olivia, and everything you possess. I expect to collect the dividends from my investment"
Olivia gazed at him in disbelief. She was his stepsister, the only person he truly loved. She had always been spared ruthlessness. Why now did Richard intend to control her, to use her in a way that both shocked and frightened her...?

My Take The Heroine is nineteen years old and she has just returned home from a Swiss(?) finishing school. The Heroine, Olivia and hero Richard are step siblings. Richard has taken care of Olivia since their parents passed away. Overall, I just found this book a bit dry. At times it was a bit difficult to read because it sort of dragged along. As an analogy, Melting Fire is to reading what dry meatloaf is to eating when you are hungry.
There were minor flirtations between the hero and heroine one that really caught me off guard was when the heroine was nude by the pool working on her tan, and Richard walks up to greet her. Well she jumps up to hug him without giving a thought to her nudity. Then again, maybe it's not a big deal. I'm an American and we are kind of skittish about nudity.

Things you may/may not like about this novel
1. The hero wore the same outfit two days in a row. When I read that I was like huh??? Why did Anne feel a need to tell us that? I mean it is not as if they were into being green back then.
2. The hero RAPES the heroine her first time. Yes that's right, not even a forced seduction like Lynne Graham had in her earlier books. This heroine fought desperately to get her brother off of her.
3. The heroine finds herself pregnant after the rape. Therefore, the hero wins in the end because the heroine is trapped.
4. The hero is a smoker. Now I am not an anti-smoking person, but for some people that is a big turnoff

If you want to read better written "keeping it in the family" type romances I recomend Green Lightning (Harlequin Presents No. 626)by anne mather and Forbidden Fireby Charlotte Lamb
I normally love the author's stories. Not this one, though.
A 19-year-old and her stepbrother in a british village, along with a stern, bent-on decorum nursemaid? Nothing about it reminds of romance. It was so stuck to society rules that it excluded any kind of fire and melting temperatures. It was just cold, distant and unappealing.
And, last thing to say about it. I didn't give a damn if the heroine was rude to the vicar's wife, there was no reason for her to be mentioned in the story.
This book had too much of a possessive theme that it was a trial turn off. The H should have allied the H to have some independence.
